July 2, 2016 | Ceremony & Reception: Andaz San Diego

Both Sam (on left) and Jorge (on right) worked closely with Nordstrom to create custom made-to-measure looks by Canali.

Instead of floral boutonnieres, the grooms opted for Elsa Peretti-designed sterling silver and red silk Amapola brooches from Tiffany & Co. “We wanted something we could wear again for special occasions,” Samuel says.

The rooftop served as the venue for both the ceremony and reception. During the cocktail hour (while the rooftop was transformed for the reception), guests were invited to a modern cocktail lounge within the Andaz for a special surprise performance from American Idol alum Stephany Negrete.

Jorge’s niece and nephew served as the flower girl and boy, tossing white rose petals from a basket made of green moss.

The grooms decided to put a twist on the traditional wedding cake by having theirs made out of watermelon instead of flour, butter, and sugar. “Jorge is a big advocate for plant-based diets, so he wanted to make sure the cake was healthy but still indulgent,” says Samuel.

Jorge Cruise and Samuel Ayers met at a bar after Jorge—who was playing wingman to a friend meeting a blind date—was told he was no longer needed as a backup. The two hit it off over a game of truth or dare and proceeded to spend the entire weekend together on a flurry of hikes, lunches and dinners. When they returned from their first getaway, to Kauai, Jorge surprised Samuel with a proposal at LACMA.

Playing off the modern architecture of the Hyatt Andaz San Diego rooftop, the couple kept to a gray, black and white-themed celebration. “White is the color of new beginnings—wiping the slate clean, so to speak—so we wanted our love story to show that this marriage was our chance to paint an ‘all-white’ canvas with our own love story,” says Samuel, adding that guests were requested to wear white on the big day. To keep the tone masculine, they rounded out the venue with greeneries like banana leaves, yucca plants and a garden wall. After a ceremony overlooking the San Diego skyline, a healthy four-course dinner was served, all in keeping with Jorge’s book Tiny and Full, the celebrity trainer’s latest diet guide. To top it off, the couple worked with Executive Chef Laura de Martin Fabbro of the Andaz to create a low calorie wedding cake made of watermelon and frosted with coconut cream.

“Don’t be afraid of having a small wedding. Ours was only 100 people and it felt much more intimate and special,” Samuel says.

Post-wedding, the couple took a quick mini-moon to Fire Island in New York. The real honeymoon will happen next summer with a trip to Paris, Antibes and Nice.
