THE PARTY Some 35,000 members of the Oglala Lakota live on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota—one of the poorest regions in the country. But the True Sioux Hope Foundation is on a mission to empower that community, and the $360,000-plus raised for critical aid at its second annual gala is a prime example. THE GUESTS Around 260 attendees gathered at the Paséa Hotel & Spa to show their support, including celeb James Van Der Beek and wife Kimberly, and local giver Lourdes Nark. They browsed an artisan market on the oceanfront lawn, which was outfitted with a teepee or two, and granted the wishes of children on the dream catcher tree.
THE HIGHLIGHTS The evening came to a close as nonprofit chair Twila True (who led the affair with Donna Pickup) was joined onstage by 20 Native Americans in traditional dress—a moment that further illuminated the need to preserve the tribe for the future. -Kristen Schott
