Moving Toward His own extremely exclusive and limited line of men’s suits

“I grew up in L.A. skateboarding and playing punk music. I made my way to San Diego in the early ’90s for the action sports industry, but fell in love with high-end fashion, working for brands like Ralph Lauren and Brooks Brothers. In 2013, armed with an affinity for tailored clothing and my own client list, I started Waters Atelier. I curate wardrobes for my clients’ lifestyles—it’s not just custom suiting, it’s a curated experience with a one-on-one consultation. I look at their art, architecture, the car in the driveway and what they do for a living. Everything is bespoke and one-of-a-kind. I’m inspired by the East Coast, London and James Bond vibe, and artists like Lichtenstein, Warhol and Basquiat. This month, I’m releasing a very limited collection of ready-to-wear, American-made shirting, suiting and blazers—a refined California casual line of Italian cotton jackets and trousers, and Egyptian cotton shirting. I’m the guy behind the scenes who knows everyone, but nobody knows me. I love what I do.”

“In high school, I was an all-state athlete with a bright future until injuries ended my career in traditional sports. I started riding BMX and ended up being in ads, and fell in love with the process of branding myself and the companies that represented me. So, I started designing brands and websites. As my freelance business grew, I eventually founded my creative agency, BASIC®. Today, we work with some of the world’s most recognized companies, like Google, Beats by Dre, Nixon and American Express. We are a passion-driven culture with offices in San Diego, the Bay Area and St. Louis. Beyond design, we continue to push our BrandBeats podcasts, sharing our views on trends, technology, culture and design. And we started Crafted, a series bringing passionate people together to inspire each other across food, art, music, entertainment and nightlife. It’s a side play to grow the city and the creative community within it. People just do not get it until they come here—it’s a badass place to work, live and play.”

Moving Toward Curating surfing’s debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

“My life can be recalled in increments of involvement with the ocean. I was born by the sea, grew up in the water and have lived by it all my life. I was a grassroots surf organizer growing up in Argentina; I started the surf brand Reef with my brother, Santiago, when I moved to America, and have worked most of my life with many surf-based humanitarian and environmental organizations as a philanthropist. I’ve been president, an honorary position, of the International Surf Association for 25 years, developing the sport around the world. Why so long? Maybe because I love to give back to surfing. It took me 22 years to get surfing into the Olympics. The Surf and Beach Festival at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020 will include all the things that make surfing appealing to modern society: art, painting, yoga, music, and environmental and humanitarian education. And of course, surfing. I love being an ambassador of the sport and trying to make the world a better place, one surfer at a time.”

“At age 9, I knew I wanted to be a chef. I grew up cooking our Sunday feast with my Dominican father for our family of nine, and to this day I carry my tia’s mantra—that through cooking we are gifting people with love. After attending The Culinary Institute of America, I felt blessed to be the baton passed along to such amazing mentors like Christian Bertrand of the famed Lut├Ęce, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Alain Ducasse. I loved the thrill of creating under pressure on back-to-back seasons of Top Chef. And when I launched two Mexican restaurants in NYC, it was an honor to be recommended by the Michelin Guide. When I moved to San Diego last year, I met Jessica Mestler at a Feeding San Diego event, which led to a collaboration on my latest restaurant, Death by Tequila. San Diego is a perfect melting pot—the climate, terroir, proximity to Baja and the sea—and an incubator for chefs to be true creators. Local farmers and chefs are redefining Southern California cuisine. What an honor it is to be a contributor to this movement.”
