Art that walks around

It’s adorned the T-shirts of Madonna and Britney Spears, and those of countless lesser-knowns, but now the tattoo art of Don Ed Hardy will be honored where it truly belongs: in a museum. At the end of this month, the Bolinas Museum will feature a photographic retrospective of the tattoo iconoclast’s work, plus a sampling of some of his fine art. Since the early 1970s, Hardy has been transforming his clients into living self-portraits by inking their entire bodies with intricate tats designed to evoke their unique personalities and experiences. With a degree in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute and an apprenticeship with a tattoo master in Japan, Hardy was never your typical tattoo artist—and here’s your chance to see why.
