Beer & BBQ Guide to Memorial Day Weekend

This long weekend, focus on the essentials.

There's barbecue too

Memorial Day Weekend has too many things going on: There are festivals for everything from curling to kites; Carnaval is taking over the Mission; and there might even be the most intense meteor shower in a decade. But there are only two essential activities: Beer and barbecue. So here are our picks.

31st Annual International Beer Festival
Where: Fort Mason
When: 7-10pm on Saturday, May 24th
Cost: $75 per person
Enjoy a brew-soaked Saturday at the International Beer Festival. Sample a variety of flavors from more than 100 breweries from around the world. You'll get bonus karma points for raising money for a local cause—proceeds from the festival go to the Telegraph Hill Cooperative Nursery School.

Food Wagon Fandango
Where: Soma StrEat Food Park
When: 11am-6pm on Sunday, May 25th
Cost: Five bands for five bucks
The first annual Food Wagon Fandango Folk Music Festival pairs twelve food trucks serving BBQ-inspired menus with five local bands, including Parlors Tricks, Dirty Cello and 77 El Deora.

Hornblower's Beer Lunch Cruise
Where: Leaves from Pier Three
When: 12-2pm on Monday, May 26th (boarding time at 11:30am)
Cost: $73 per person
Between the premium day drinking hours of 12pm and 2pm on Monday May 26th, you can count the number of flags waving off mastheads while you motor your way under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Coastal Escape
Where: Pfeiffer State Park
When: Anytime you want
Cost: Money for gas and beer
It's the perfect time for a coastal drive. Load up the car with blankets, a box of PBR, and all the BBQ fixings and head south to Big Sur. Try Pfeiffer State Park, where you can watch the sunset over the water, imbibe beneath the redwoods, and throw some bacon wrapped hot dogs on the grill.
