Black Tie Goes to the Beach

A paint-splattered gown classes up surf style.

What if you could wear a dress to a black-tie gala, then turn around and sashay down to the beach? That’s the dream of Bernal Heights illustrator Valerie Santillo and Pac Heights designer Anna Chiu, whose new label, Kamperett, pulls off the near impossible: classing up surf style with high-end silk and paint. The pair’s first collection hits Rand + Statler, Le Point, and LisaSaysGah.com this month, with showstoppers like this hand-painted linden wrap dress. To nail the splattered look, which was inspired by the tide spraying the rocks at Sutro Baths, Santillo wielded a large paintbrush slathered with black silk paint. Each made-to-order dress takes over two hours to paint. $895, Kamperett.com
