Blend of bliss and bash

Area yoga enthusiasts—or at least those who like to downward dog by day and down beer by night—will pack up their mats and SIGG bottles and caravan up to Squaw Valley, for the four-day frenzy of meditation, music, and hedonism known as the Wanderlust California festival. Local yoga bigwigs such as Stephanie Snyder and Janet Stone will be on hand to teach; Anusara yoga founder John Friend will inspire reverence and awe; and the electropop mashup artist Girl Talk, and Michael Franti and Spearhead, will take care of the more rambunctious forms of release. The only things missing seem to be Deepak Chopra and some purple haze. (To be fair, Chopra was slated to show up at June’s Wanderlust Vermont festival.) Judging by our festival’s skyrocketing attendance rate (up 400 percent from 2009 to 2010), Wanderlust cofounder Jeff Krasno seems to have hit the Bay Area’s sweet spot for combining inner peace and debauchery. “We start off the morning with yoga and acoustic music,” he says, “and as the day progresses, the vibe gets more Burning Man.” July 28–31, Squaw Valley USA, North Lake Tahoe,
