Firebrand Bakery Goes Big Time

A beloved wholesale bakery opens a brick-and-mortar store in one of Oakland's hippest communities.


For seven years, Firebrand Artisan Breads was a bakery without a storefront, selling its widely beloved loaves wholesale to numerous restaurants and a couple of grocery stores. But that blessedly changed in late November, when co-owners Matt Kreutz and Colleen Orlando opened their retail shop, in downtown Oakland’s Hive development. The new space offers more square footage and, with it, more opportunity. In addition to their wood oven–fired breads, Kreutz and Orlando have rolled out pretzels and a roster of pastries, seen here. The pair are also planning to offer baking classes to the public. “We were hidden away for so long,” says Kreutz. “Now we want to bring everyone in.” 2343 Broadway (near 24th St.), Oakland
