A Highway 1 Road Trip You Can Take This Weekend

Almost no advance planning required!

Highway 1

Highway 1

Spring is in the air, and Highway 1 beckons for a weekend road trip. All you have to do is round up some friends and bring the car. We've done the hard work of crafting an itinerary for you. Here’s how to catch some coastal bliss this weekend.

Start your trip off by taking to the high seas on a Queen of Hearts fishing boat. Leaving from Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay, the sportfishers at Queen of Hearts offer all kinds of ways get in touch with the creatures of the deep. It’s whale watching season for another week, so hurry. But don't worry if you don't get there in time—rockfishing begins in April.

Whet your appetite at Gourmet Appliance, a Half Moon Bay emporium for high-end kitchenware that doubles as a space for tasty events. This Saturday from 12 to two, chef Analisa Miranda will hold a free demonstration on ravioli making—and you can buy some fresh pasta after.

By this time you may need an energy boost, so pop in to Café Society, a brand new café turned community center in Half Moon Bay. This creative downtown gathering spot is owned by a guy named Harpo Marx (no joke) who, like his namesake, is a man of few words and big ideas. The café offers jazz performances, art displays and poetry readings, in addition to micro-roasted coffee and fresh pastries. If caffeine’s not your style, grab a beer and watch March Madness at sports-friendly Devil’s Slide Taproom in Pacifica, which opened late last year to rave reviews.

As you curve down the coast toward Pescadero, let your weekend getaway take a rustic turn. Bunk down in one of the many farmhouses available for one to two night stays—some are along the coast and others sit tucked into the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains. If you’re on a budget, stop your trip further up the coast book a bed at the Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel, which features an oceanside hot tub and is a quick hike away from the nearby tidepools.
