Put a Ring on It

An artist makes a bold play for an architect's legacy.

The Proposal, a multimedia exhibition on display at the San Francisco Art Institute, details the years-long attempt by artist Jill Magid to negotiate with various public and private players involved in a tangled bid for ownership of the archives of Luis Barragán, the late Pritzker prize–winning Mexican architect. In an attempt to repatriate the collection, Magid has (with the blessing of Barragán’s family) created a two-carat diamond ring out of the architect’s remains, which she’s offered to the archive’s holders in exchange for the collection.

“The Proposal” is on view from September 9 through December 10.
