Retooled Polaroid Camera Is an Instant Classic

Not everything has to be an iPhone.

It’s familiar yet oddly exotic, old-school but instantly gratifying. It’s the I-1: a Polaroid camera reinvented for the modern age—a counterpoint in every conceivable way to your iPhone. Designed by Swedish electronics studio Teenage Engineering, produced by the Impossible Project (the last remaining manufacturer of Polaroid film), and introduced in San Francisco last month, the new camera combines iconic elements of the original Polaroid—a single point-and-shoot button, analog film, a boxy shape—with welcome upgrades like a rechargeable battery, a detachable LED flash ring, and Bluetooth capability for operating the device with an app.
