Come work with us!

SAN FRANCISCO MAGAZINE is seeking a creative, resourceful, fast, flexible, low-drama, no-ego, high-sophistication design director to join its smart, scrappy, National Magazine Award–winning editorial staff. The design director oversees the visual strategy for every aspect of the San Francisco brand, best known for its long-form feature stories like this and this and this, its authoritative public-interest journalism (see here and here), and its beautiful and compelling covers (SPD and Coverjunkie love us).

This is a hands-on, in-the-trenches position. You will be designing covers, features, and front-of-book departments; collaborating closely with the editor-in-chief and art and photography directors; conceptualizing and generating new design approaches; assigning (or creating) infographics, illustrations, and charts; following layouts through all phases of production; overseeing color correction; managing production assistants; and shipping files.

You should be an extreme magazine nerd with an East Coast work ethic and a West Coast independent streak. You should have a high level of design sophistication; a near-encyclopedic knowledge of past and current design trends; a natural feeling for typography; a hefty Rolodex of illustrators and photographers; and a natural-born instinct for visual storytelling. And most of all, you should love San Francisco for all of its many flaws.

These are the basic requirements:

• Minimum 7 years editorial design experience at a magazine or agency

• Expert in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator

• Able to work independently and collaboratively

• Strong management and communication skills

• Able to work within small—sometimes crazy small—budgets

• Comfortable juggling several tasks at once

• Able to conceive of the big picture, as well as to finalize all the details

San Francisco is a stand-alone city magazine, part of Modern Luxury, a national network of local lifestyle magazines.
