Thanksgiving Playlist

It goes without saying that we should be thankful that good music is so abundant in the Bay Area. Here, a snapshot of upcoming shows and releases to listen to while enduring a food coma.

When My Time Comes by Dawes
This uplifting melody may come in handy after sitting around the table at Thanksgiving listening to every family member give their extended analysis of the election season. And luckily, the L.A.-based rock band is playing a two-night new years show at the Independent.

Sea Lion Goth Blues
by The Growlers
With a sound straight out of the surf rock movement in California circa 1960, The Growlers are planning to release album number 3 in early 2013. In the meantime, you can enjoy their bent sound at the Fillmore on Dec. 27.

Loving You Down by Bells
The Berkeley/Oakland quartet blends soulful harmonies with heavy percussion to create a sound all their own. They’ve yet to release a debut album—"Loving You Down" is their first single—but you can check them out at Brick and Mortar come the new year if you want to hear more.

Angels by xx (Yalls remix)
The local producer just came out with a slew of new remixes, tinkering with already great tracks like Teen Daze’s “The New Balearic,” but a personal favorite is his remix of “Angels” off the new xx album. What is a moody lackluster song from the xx is transformed into an ethereal, bouncy beat the yawns and sighs with Yalls signature written all over it. Download the zip, or see him in concert next Tuesday at Public Works.

The Wheel by S O H N
The Vienna (by way of London) producer just debuted his first EP, The Wheel, on the new label Aesop. The staccato harmonies layered with the strong lead vocals hold the song together, while lilting percussions dance their way through to keep things moving forward.

Breezeblocks by Alt- J
The British Alt-pop quartet released their debut album An Awesome Wave back in May and have been touring ever since, and luckily they seem to be making plenty of stops here in S.F., next one being at Bottom of the Hill on Dec. 11.

Do it for the Bay by Main Attrakionz
Fall always feel like the right time for a Bay Area anthem, and Main Attrakionz’s song, off their newly released Bossalinis & Fooliyones is exactly that. With a smooth underlying beat with trumpets helping along the chorus, rappers Mondre M.A.N. and Squadda B have plenty of room for word play and riffing.
