Top Chef's Melissa King Wants to Cook Your Dinner

At Co+Lab.

The difference is in the details at Co+Lab, a new pop-up dining series created by San Francisco chef Melissa King. Although the series is first and foremost about King’s cooking (she was a Top Chef finalist in season 12), it’s also intended to showcase the Bay Area’s surfeit of artisan producers. “It’s about the plate-ware maker, the brewer, the farmer who handpicked your vegetables—every little detail,” says King.

The idea for a dinner series evolved during the filming of Top Chef, as King experimented with new techniques and bonded with fellow contestant (and future winner) Mei Lin. The two planned collaborative dinners, but King soon began dreaming of a continuing series in which she would partner with local makers.

Her first Co+Lab meal, prepared in collaboration with Lin, sold out in less than a minute. Held in early March, the five-course meal included a seasonal crudo and chicken mole and used ingredients from Dandelion Chocolate, Philz Coffee, and Moon Fox Farms, among others. The next dinner will take place sometime in late May or early June, most likely at Nico; look for updates at chefmelissaking.com.
