The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Scalamandré collab to bring history and textiles together in a chic new collection.
Inspired by rare antiques, artifacts and ancient heirlooms housed in the MET’s collections, luxury textile brand Scalamandré offers the opportunity to bring museum magic home with its new collab in partnership with the museum. In preparation for this collection of fabrics, wallcoverings and trims, the Scalamandré design team spent several days studying the galleries, followed by culling through thousands of photographs of items stored in the archives. “The MET has an exceptional armor collection with rare and intricately etched and inlay patterns,” says Lorraine Lang, Scalamandré’s executive vice president of design. “We developed the armor patterns into innovative wallcoverings of appliqued cork, embroidered linens and grasscloths, and handcrafted dimensional papers.” These unlikely museum sources inspiring the museum-quality home selects, which can be purchased through Scalamandré’s showrooms and online, were reimagined to create a bevy of standout pieces, including the Saxony Scroll wallcovering’s detailed pattern and the Knight wallcovering’s close resemblance to the intricate metalwork found in the 14thcentury suits of armor. “We felt that the inspiration for each pattern we developed should mirror the experience of a visitor touring the museum,” Lang notes. “The museum houses an eclectic collection, with a broader reach of history and style than almost any museum in the world. The difference is in the depth and richness to each period of art, all of it at the highest level... This was an exceptional opportunity.”
