Artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby speaks at Stanford.

Artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby.

As part of Stanford’s Intersections series, Njideka Akunyili Crosby will be speaking on campus April 13. The Nigerian-born, Los Angeles–based artist’s compositions—a mix of media such as paint, fabric, paper transfers and collage—often depict domestic scenes.

Closer inspection, however, reveals that historical, political and personal references are layered into her works. “[Crosby’s] deep engagement with the history of large-scale painting in the 20th century, combined with her consistent references to the contemporary Nigerian daily life, makes the work rich across myriad disciplines,” says Cantor Arts Center’s chief curator Alison Gass. “Certainly, that makes her an ideal artist to bring to Stanford, given the University’s commitment to cross-disciplinary modes of thinking.”
