Byington Vineyard & Winery Tasting Room
Convenience was the impetus for Byington Vineyard & Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains to build a second tasting room that will open shortly in downtown Los Altos. “While the drive to our winery is scenic with breathtaking views, we wanted to offer another way for people in Silicon Valley to pick up their shipments and taste new releases,” says General Manager Martin Hoellrigl. The new tasting room, which will be open daily, will showcase the winery’s Santa Cruz Mountains flagship pinot noirs and other varietals, as well as chardonnay under the Tin Cross label from its 240-acre Alexander Valley ranch. The 50-seat tasting room, which will occasionally offer live music, can also host private events. 366 Main St., Los Altos

Loma Brewing Company
When San Francisco restaurateur Scott Youkilis decided to open Loma Brewing Company this summer in downtown Los Gatos, it proved a perfect fit in the spot once home to Los Gatos Brewing Company. It also helped that his younger brother and business partner, Kevin, a retired Boston Red Sox baseman, lives five minutes away in Monte Sereno. The 7,000-square-foot interior was redone with banquettes and booths, as well as the addition of a 40-seat private dining room. The taps hold six Loma beers brewed on-site, rounded out by a selection of elusive West Coast brews and three versions of Old Fashioneds, made with gin, tequila or bourbon. Chef Aubree Arndt serves punchy pub classics such as smoke trout flatbread; an American wagyu burger; and half a chicken, fried to a golden crunch. “It’s fun and festive, with great beer that can’t be found elsewhere,” says Scott. 130 N. Ser Winery/Silvertip Vineyards Tasting Room
What’s better than one winery opening a new tasting room? Two wineries combining forces to open one in downtown Saratoga with more wines to try. That’s what Ser Winery of Santa Cruz and Silvertip Vineyards of Los Gatos did this summer. The joint venue offers up a tasting bar, as well as comfy chairs and tables. “Our objective is to get more exposure,” says Philip Nelson, owner of Silvertip. “We’re open only infrequently at the winery. But our tasting room here is open four days a week.” Silvertip specializes in estate pinot noir, chardonnay and syrah, all grown on what was once a Christmas tree farm. Ser concentrates on vineyard-designated, Old World-style wines, a few from lesser-known varietals such as cabernet pfeffer.
