From the Editor: The Next Act

A few words from the new editor-in-chief of Modern Luxury Silicon Valley, Carolyne Zinko.

If there’s one thing we know in this world, and especially in Silicon Valley, it’s that things change. Life changes. Technology changes. The face in this editor’s note too.

Starting with this issue of Modern Luxury Silicon Valley, the editing baton has been passed to me from Anh-Minh Le, who has ably led this magazine since its launch in 2016, bringing the region’s talent and diversity to life in its pages—including the cover story she penned, among others in this issue, a dynamic profile of Los Altos native Jon M. Chu, director of the Hollywood blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians. Brava, Anh-Minh!

For the magazine’s next act, it’s my turn. Please allow me to introduce myself.

As a three-decade resident of Silicon Valley, I’ve seen it change as the tech industry has evolved from hardware to software, from the dot-com boom and bust to the social media whirl we find ourselves in today. The population has grown. Our communities have changed with the establishment of Google, Facebook and countless startups headquartered in downtowns from San Mateo through Los Gatos and beyond. We have more upscale options for dining, business meetings and relaxation—from new Michelin-starred restaurants to five-star hotels like the Four Seasons Silicon Valley, the setting for my editor’s photo.

From my cub-reporter days writing for The Peninsula Times Tribune and the San Jose Mercury News to, more recently, my 22 years at the San Francisco Chronicle as the chief lifestyle and culture reporter, I’ve developed a network of connections within the Valley’s tech, fashion, design, media, philanthropy and arts communities. I’ve covered many aspects of life, from crime and court hearings to larger-than-life personalities and gala parties, sometimes with my husband, personal trainer Dan Dieguez, in tow. (Is it just me, or does anyone else have trouble getting their partners to wear a tux?)

As I look out at Silicon Valley, which is not only a place, but a state of mind, I know—as you do too—that the whole world is watching us. There’s much we can share with one another, from the Valley’s history and innovations to its fashions and lifestyle. Like a newspaper that’s different from top to bottom each day, this magazine is different from top to bottom each issue, allowing for an exciting opportunity to provide you with stories that will inform, entertain and, I hope, surprise you. Amid all the change, there’s nowhere I’d rather be. If you want to talk about what you’d like to see here, please email me.
