The historic Hotel Chelsea introduces Teruko, a refined Japanese restaurant and sushi bar brought to life by Sunday Hospitality and partner Charles Seich. Situated on the hotel's underground level, Teruko is the latest addition to its acclaimed culinary program, following the celebrated relaunch of El Quijote and the debut of Lobby Bar and Café Chelsea.

Dover Sole

This new restaurant is named in honor of the late Teruko Yokoi, a celebrated Japanese-born artist who once lived within Hotel Chelsea with her husband, painter Sam Francis. Teruko isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a tribute to her and her renowned family. Here, fine dining meets fine art, with Yokoi’s original works woven into the space, bringing her creative spirit to life in every corner of this iconic hotel. To mark the opening, NYC’s Hollis Taggart gallery presents Teruko Yokoi: Noh Theatre, a captivating exhibition that spans her artistic journey from the vibrant days she spent at the Chelsea in the 1950s to her later work in the early 2000s. On view through June 14, the show offers over 20 pieces that blend modern American abstraction with the quiet elegance of Japanese culture, offering guests the possibility of experiencing more of Teruko's work a few blocks away in the Chelsea gallery district.

Led by executive chef Tadashi Ono, formerly of Matsuri at The Maritime Hotel, Teruko celebrates traditional Japanese ingredients with a modern sensibility. Highlights include smoked and seared Kampachi with scallion and jalapeño, whole Dover sole karaage with ponzu and grilled Ozaki Wagyu served with very fresh wasabi. The edomae style sushi program is helmed by head sushi chef Hideaki Watanabe, offering precise craftsmanship rooted in centuries of tradition.

Sashimi

The beverage program is just as notable as the food menu, featuring a deep collection of rare sakes and Japanese whiskies curated over the years by George Padilla of Rule of Thirds and Hotel Chelsea’s award-winning director of bars, Brian Evans. Claire Paparazzo, the hotel’s acclaimed wine director, provides a beautifully tailored wine list, while pastry chef Paty Zamarripa brings rounds off the meal with excellent dessert offerings.

The menu is thoughtfully designed for everyone, whether you're sharing small plates with friends or indulging in a big night out. The ambiance is warm, the lighting flattering and every detail feels considered.
