I’ve often found that the greatest challenge in travel is finding a resort that balances family-friendly offerings with truly luxurious experiences. On a recent trip to The St. Regis Cap Cana Resort (marriott.com) with my family, I discovered that balance. The resort, marking St. Regis’ long-awaited Caribbean debut, stretches along one of the Dominican Republic’s most coveted coastlines, where the brand’s storied sophistication meets the island’s vibrant cultural heritage. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this was a place thoughtfully designed for families— where children can explore and play, yet every detail, from accommodations to dining, reflects the refined elegance that defines St. Regis.
The resort’s vision begins with the land itself. Upon entering, we were immediately captivated by the architecture and interiors inspired by Cap Cana’s dramatic landscape. Palm-fringed beaches, rugged cliffs and the endless Caribbean horizon are echoed throughout, creating a property that feels both modern and unmistakably Dominican. As a family, we felt instantly connected to nature: Natural stone, warm woods and textured finishes harmonize with the surroundings, while expansive open spaces frame views that invite sunlight and sea breezes indoors.

I was especially struck by the resort’s homage to the island: the muñeca sin rostro, or faceless doll. This iconic Dominican symbol embodies unity and diversity—vibrant colors reflect the land, ornamentation captures the spirit of the people, and her faceless form belongs to everyone. Woven throughout the resort, she is more than decoration; she is a reminder of the island’s rich cultural legacy and a symbol of transformation.
Storytelling extends into every detail. The spa mirrors the sculpted coastline with its interplay of water and stone, offering treatments rooted in local botanicals. Guest rooms feature custom stone tiles and artisanal finishes that honor Dominican craftsmanship, while the cigar lounge’s sweeping curves evoke smoke rising against a Caribbean sunset. Everywhere, form and function converge on a single idea: the earth transformed into art, and culture elevated through design.

Accommodations merge landscape and luxury as well. Each of the 200 rooms and 36 suites faces the ocean, with select options featuring private plunge pools that blur the line between indoors and out. The 6,000-square-foot Presidential Suite feels more like a private estate, its multiple terraces framing the horizon from dawn to dusk. Inside, a palette of ocean blues, sandy neutrals and natural textures channels both the surrounding seascape and the traveler’s taste for understated elegance.
Culinary experiences carry the same sense of place. We were drawn to chef Diego Muñoz’s NINA, the resort’s marquee restaurant, where Latin American flavors are reimagined through inventive techniques that showcase regional ingredients. Cielo Mio, the rooftop restaurant, became our favorite spot for golden-hour sunsets, with its playful twist on the classic bloody mary—the “Quisqueya Mary”—blending Dominican rum and fried plantain.

Just beyond the resort, it is hard not to notice the breathtaking Jack Nicklaus-designed Punta Espada Golf Course, which offers world-class play along oceanfront fairways. Back at the resort, our family delighted in interactive activities, cultural programs and shared experiences that brought the island to life. A standout highlight was the playful collaboration with French Riviera brand Vilebrequin, whose striped pareos, swim trunks and accessories perfectly captured the resort’s breezy, anything-can-happen spirit.

Together, these elements shaped more than a luxury getaway. For us, The St. Regis Cap Cana became a narrative of heritage and horizon, where culture, design and the brand’s timeless rituals converge to redefine Caribbean luxury for travelers of every age.
