Northern Liberties has no shortage of energy, but true polish can be harder to come by. Enter Laurent Tourondel, whose latest opening, Terra Grill at Piazza Alta, brings a distinctly elevated lens to the neighborhood, anchored by a Michelin-starred pedigree that subtly shifts expectations.

Set just off the Piazza, next to the chef ’s own Scusi Pizza, Terra Grill feels like a natural evolution for the area. It’s an American grill at its core, but one shaped by Tourondel’s French training and Italian influence, with open-flame cooking as its throughline. The result is refined without feeling formal, the kind of place that works as easily for a casual dinner as it does for a night that calls for something more.

Starters strike a balance between freshness and depth. A miso spinach and avocado salad leans savory and unexpected, while hamachi sashimi is clean and composed. A classic wedge, layered with grilled applewood bacon, blue cheese and smoked ranch, lands with just the right amount of indulgence. From there, shareables like short rib steamed buns with pickled jalapeño-cilantro chimichurri and peekytoe crab with smashed peas and avocado add richness and texture.

The wood-fired grill anchors the menu. Rotisserie chicken comes perfumed with tarragon and cherry peppers, while Pekin duck breast, lacquered in spice and honey, delivers crisp skin and depth. A prime skirt steak arrives with a proper char, and the Wagyu hot dog wrapped in Grand Cru Gruyère en croûte is equal parts playful and decadent.

Seafood holds its own. Branzino is brightened with soy and lemon, while Ora King salmon is offset by a curried pineapple sauce that adds a subtle, unexpected lift. Sides stay classic, think creamy mashed potatoes, broccolini and hand-cut fries, letting the grill take center stage, while desserts lean nostalgic, from a decadent caramel popcorn sundae to a fruit pie finished with herb-laced ice cream.

Designed by Olya Volkova, the space mirrors the menu’s balance, warm, energetic and polished, with a courtyard that extends the experience outdoors. In a neighborhood better known for buzz than refinement, Terra Grill raises the bar, introducing a more polished, chef-driven point of view that still feels entirely at home in Northern Liberties.
